MADISON, Wis. (Legal Newsline) - Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced on Monday that his office filed an enforcement action against a Stevens Point meat company for alleged violations of consumer protection laws.
Countryside Meats LLC allegedly violated various state consumer protection laws in connection with its door-to-door sales of meat and seafood companies. Countryside, which is owned by Stevens Point resident Elijah A. Milbauer, sells its products in targeted communities in the state.
Countryside's sales personnel allegedly engaged in a variety of misrepresentations while selling its products, including misrepresenting the type and quality of meat and the price per pound of meat. Countryside also allegedly failed to honor requests for refunds, which customers are entitled to by law.
In addition, Countryside allegedly violated an assurance of compliance filed in 2008 that addressed similar conduct. The assurance of compliance was based on previous complaints about the company.
Van Hollen's office is seeking penalties against the company, restitution for injured consumers and recovery of the state's costs for bringing the action.
