MADISON, Wis. (Legal Newsline) - Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced the resolution of a civil action on Monday that was filed against a well drilling company and its owner.
Van Hollen's office obtained a stipulated judgment to resolve the Dane County civil complaint filed against Steven M. Beck and Absolute Well & Pump Service LLC on December 1. The complaint alleged that the defendants violated Wisconsin law by failing to submit 276 required well abandonment reports within 30 days of abandoning certain private wells during 2008.
In addition, the civil complaint alleges that the defendants installed new wells, performed pump work and failed to provide the Department of Natural Resources and pump owners with water sample analysis within the legally required period of time.
The defendants have been ordered to pay $10,000 in statutory penalties and forfeitures.
"We will continue to work with the DNR to make sure that Wisconsin's environmental laws maintaining safe drinking water are followed," Van Hollen said.
Van Hollen reached a similar $7,000 settlement with a drilling company and its owner in February over alleged violations of numerous pump and drilling laws, including 26 late well abandonment reports, and his office received a $13,937 default judgment against a well drilling company in January for violating multiple state well drilling and safe water drinking laws including the failure to submit 23 water samples.
