COLUMBUS, Ohio (Legal Newsline) - Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and the Ohio Department of Transportation announced a settlement on Monday with a Henderson, Texas, machine transport company.
Machinery Transport Inc. agreed to pay $726,757.27 under the settlement after an accident with a tractor trailer operated by the company that caused damage to the Interstate 74 and Interstate 275 interchange near Cincinnati. The settlement money will be used by the Ohio Department of Transportation for costs associated with the repair of the interchange.
"This agreement ensures a significant recovery of taxpayer dollars for Ohioans for damage caused to our transportation infrastructure," DeWine said. "In these tough budgetary times, protecting Ohio taxpayers is a top priority."
On May 20, 2008, a trailer containing a locomotive engine separated from a tractor trailer operated by Machine Transport Inc. on the westbound I-74/I-275/US-52 underpass ramp to southbound I-275. Two support columns were destroyed by the locomotive, which caused the eastbound I-74/US-52 bridge overhead to drop and become completely impassable.
The payment by Machinery Transport Inc. will recover expenses the Ohio Department of Transportation incurred in the removal of the locomotive, repairing the bridge, constructing temporary and permanent supports for the bridge, and constructing crossovers to restore eastbound I-74/US-52 traffic.
