Neb. AG files for U.S. Senate run

Bruning

LINCOLN, Neb. (Legal Newsline) - Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning has decided to run for the U.S. Senate in 2012.

The Republican announced last week that he has filed paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission. Bruning, who has been in office since 2003, is a former president of the National Association of Attorneys General.

Bruning will be seeking the seat held by two-term Democrat Ben Nelson. Bruning previously served in the Nebraska Legislature from 1997-2003.

It is not the first time Bruning has mulled a Senate run. He formed an exploratory committee in 2007, but ultimately dropped out of the race to offer his support to Mike Johanns.

Bruning earned his law degree from the University of Nebraska and was elected AG in 2002 with 66 percent of the vote. He ran unopposed in 2006 and 2010.

Bruning made the announcement on Twitter. He added that a formal announcement will be made in a few weeks.
