Utah AG undergoing chemotherapy

Shurtleff

SALT LAKE CITY (Legal Newsline) - Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff shared with a Salt Lake City television station on Monday that he has started chemotherapy treatments.

Shurtleff revealed in a YouTube video last month that doctors found a malignant tumor in his appendix.

Shurtleff, in the video, said he was recovering from an emergency appendectomy in which doctors found and removed a cancerous growth.

The attorney general said he had been having some stomach problems and finally went to a doctor to have them checked out. Fortunately, he said, the tumor was found "really early" and was contained to his appendix.

Shurtleff told ABC4 News on Monday that he will undergo "aggressive" chemo treatments every other week for the next six months.

As he's said before, he doesn't expect the treatments or any related procedures to slow him down much. He told the television station he will keep working, even if it's from home.

The attorney general, who is encouraging others to keep themselves healthy, get regular checkups and to get a colonoscopy, told ABC4 he plans to continue "being very open" about his struggle with the disease, even writing a blog about it.
