DENVER (Legal Newsline) - Colorado Attorney General John Suthers announced on Tuesday that a man who allegedly provided fraudulent foreclosure relief services will pay the state more than $180,000 in restitution.
Sherron L. Lewis Jr. failed to respond to the state's lawsuit over his alleged illegal foreclosure-relief activities, so a court ordered him to pay $181,266 to the state in restitution.
In the suit, Suthers alleged that Lewis operated illegally by charging homeowners upfront fees and obtaining an interest in their homes with the promise that he could stop their foreclosures.
Suthers further alleged that after collecting the fees, Lewis would assist consumers in filing legal challenges to the foreclosures. In all cases, however, judges have dismissed these challenges as being without merit, Suthers says.
In August, Lewis was ordered by a Jefferson County District Court judge to pay more than $76,000 in restitution to his alleged victims, including an elderly Illinois woman. Lewis had allegedly illegally collected upfront fees and illegally acquired an interest in the properties as part of his services in that case.
