Harris finally declares victory in Calif. AG race

Harris

LOS ANGELES (Legal Newsline) - Kamala Harris declared victory Tuesday in a California attorney general race that was too close to call for three weeks after Election Day.

Republican Steve Cooley conceded last week, and Harris held a press conference Tuesday in Los Angeles to declare a victory her campaign victory predicted after Election Day produced no definitive result.

"Uncounted ballots will only bolster Kamala Harris's lead, as they will reflect Harris's strong Election Day advantage," her campaign said earlier this month.

Harris, the San Francisco district attorney, holds a lead of less than 1 percent. Cooley is the district attorney for Los Angeles County.

Harris will be the first female and first minority attorney general of California. She replaces Jerry Brown, a Democrat who started many environmental initiatives while AG.

Brown was elected governor this month. Harris' victory completed a statewide sweep by Democrats.

Harris received support from President Barack Obama during her campaign.
