NEW YORK (Legal Newsline) -- New York gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo -- the state's current Attorney General -- threw his support behind attorney general-hopeful Eric Schneiderman on Sunday.
Cuomo announced his endorsement of the Democratic nominee in Central Park. He had not endorsed Schneiderman or any other candidate during a five-way race for the Democratic nomination.
"Eric has always been a leader for reform in Albany, never shying away from taking on the tough fights on behalf of all New Yorkers," Cuomo said.
"He is the clear choice to continue our positive and aggressive work in the Attorney General's office and I am proud to endorse him."
Schneiderman, a state senator, said he is prepared to take on the challenges of the office.
"From leading a national effort to reform the student loan industry, to cracking down on heath care and mortgage frauds that have cost New Yorkers millions to standing up for government reform, Andrew Cuomo's record is second to none," Schneiderman said.
"As Attorney General, I pledge to continue Andrew's outstanding work and look forward to serving with a governor who will bring integrity, honesty and independence to the office to make sure our government works for the people of New York."
Cuomo's endorsement puts him at odds with Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who recently endorsed Cuomo and supports Schneiderman's rival, Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan.
