Former candidate endorses Whitman for Calif. gov

SACRAMENTO (Legal Newsline) - The candidate Meg Whitman defeated in the California Republican gubernatorial primary earlier this year is now endorsing her.

California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner announced his support for Whitman, the Republican nominee, earlier this week.

In a statement released by the California Republican Party on Tuesday, Poizner said he is backing the entire GOP ticket come November.

He says doing so will force government to downsize and stimulate business.

"As we begin the traditional Labor Day kickoff of the general election campaign, Californians know very well that our state is in severe crisis and that the decisions made next year will in many ways decide what kind of future our state will have," Poizner says.

"Our ticket is led by successful business women who know that if there is to be a viable public sector, there must be a vibrant private sector. They know that the best, most reliable job is one created by the private sector. They understand that governments, like families and businesses, must live within their means."

He continued, "Too many of the Democratic Party nominees believe that the answer to all our state's problems can be solved by larger government. But government isn't the answer. It has had its chance, and it has failed miserably."

Poizner did not offer any praise for Whitman, whom he accused of being a "Republican in name only" during their primary contest.

Whitman continues to spend millions in a neck-and-neck race against the Democratic nominee and current California Attorney General Jerry Brown.
