Candidate: N.Y. AG position the most important

Person

NEW YORK (Legal Newsline) - Carl Person, the Libertarian candidate for New York Attorney General, says the position he is seeking is a more important one than the Presidency.

Person says he would have the power to follow through on Wall Street reforms promised but not delivered by President Barack Obama. He also says municipalities should appoint their own attorneys general.

Person said the Democratic and Republican candidates are prosecutors "who did nothing with their power."

"If, however, I am elected," Person added, "I will have the power and willingness to start re-taking America by many practical economic reforms."

He says the New York Attorney General is the most powerful elective office in the world because the attorney general:

-Is elected and can't be fired;

-Needs no new legislation;

-Has discretionary power and needs no approvals from elected officials;

-Raises billions of dollars by filing lawsuits; and

-Renders his or her own legal opinions.

Among the reforms he proposes are town attorneys general, a tuition-free equivalency college for New York residents, local self-employment markets, licensing local stock exchanges to provide financing for small businesses and encouraging renewable energy projects.

"Federal, state and local governments could do any of these things, but don't," Person says.

"There's no interest by politicians who receive campaign contributions and assistance from corporations and groups opposed to economic reform, while getting richer and richer.

"If elected, I can start the grassroots economic reforms that are needed to save our democracy and the American way of life."
