INDIANAPOLIS (Legal Newsline) - Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller announced on Tuesday that his office has filed a lawsuit against a publishing company and its owner over allegations that they violated the state's consumer protection laws.
New Century Publishing and David Caswell, its owner, allegedly accepted payment from 16 aspiring authors for publishing services that the defendants knew would not be provided.
These 16 authors paid thousands of dollars to have their book published, printed, promoted, hosted on Web sites and have book signing appearances arranged, Zoeller says.
The lawsuit alleges that the books were not published, the promotional book signing events did not happen and no Web sites were ever built.
"Our investigation into the consumer complaints indicates that he intentionally misled consumers," Zoeller said. "He also has a history of deceptive business practices which make this action necessary."
Zoeller recommends that, before doing business with any company, a consumer should visit the attorney general's Web site to look for any legal actions filed against those you are going to do potential business with.
