Facebook exec leads Calif. AG hopefuls in cash-on-hand

Chris Kelly (D)

Kamala Harris (D)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Legal Newsline)- Facebook executive Chris Kelly has the clear fundraising lead in the California attorney general's race thanks to the $2 million he has pumped into his war chest, campaign finance reports filed this week indicate.

In all, Kelly just over $2,034,000 in his campaign account at the end of the year, according to papers filed with the California secretary of state's office.

In a statement, Kelly said he raised $204,000 from individuals in the reporting period that ran from July 1 to Dec. 31.

Trailing Kelly in cash-on-hand is fellow Democrat San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris, who reported having $1.25 million in the bank.

Also in the Democratic race for state attorney general is Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, Assembly Majority Leader Alberto Torrico of Newark and state Assemblyman Ted Lieu of Torrance.

Campaign filings show that Delgadillo had $1.19 million in the bank at the start of the year, while Torrico had $1.13 million and Lieu had just over $1 million in his campaign war chest.

State Assemblyman Pedro Nava of Santa Barbara trails in cash-on-hand with just $339,000, reports show.

On the Republican side, state Sen. Tom Harman of Huntington Beach reported having $314,000 in his campaign account.

Also vying for the Republican AG nomination is Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley and John Eastman, who recently resigned as dean of the Chapman University Law School to run.

Neither Cooley nor Eastman were required to submit campaign reports since they were not official candidates last year.

In a recent interview with Legal Newsline, Eastman said he had raised about $100,000 in pledges.

The AG hopefuls are each hoping to succeed Democrat Jerry Brown as the state's chief legal officer. Brown is widely expected to run for governor this year.
