ST. PAUL, Minn. (Legal Newsline)- A conservative national political action committee has decided to withdraw its challenge to a Minnesota law that bans robo-calls, the state attorney general said Thursday.
American Future Fund Political Action had asked the Federal Election Commission to strike down the state law that prohibits the use of automatic dialing and announcing devices without the call recipient's permission.
In a statement, Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson, a Democrat, said the Des Moines, Iowa-based group's effort to overturn the robo-call law was misguided.
"People have the right to be let alone in their homes, and robo-calls are particularly intrusive and annoying to Minnesota citizens. The Fund's request to strike down Minnesota's law was misguided, and I am glad to see the request abandoned," Swanson said.
In November, Swanson formally asked the FEC to uphold the Minnesota law against robo-calls.
The American Future Fund operates as a 501(c)(4) and was formed to provide a conservative and free market viewpoint, the organization's Web site says.
