LOS ANGELES (Legal Newsline)-The global law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP is the best litigation firm in the United States, according to The American Lawyer magazine.

The Los Angeles-based firm has more than 1,000 lawyers in 15 offices across the United States. The firm's honor was announced in The American Lawyer's issue this month.

"Time and again in 2008-09, blue-chip clients in desperate straits have turned to Gibson Dunn lawyers to get them out of trouble at every stage, from subpoena to summary judgment to U.S. Supreme Court final appeal," the magazine said of Gibson Dunn.

The magazine's editors also noted that: "Gibson Dunn has also been a top choice for law firms in need of their own rescue, particularly in malpractice litigation."

Of the firm's legal feats last year, the magazine had this to say: "The litany is breathtaking: helping Dole Food Company, Inc., end a costly war of attrition with Nicaraguan plaintiffs, and uncovering a nasty pattern of fraud in the process; beating back massive, reputation-gutting employment class actions for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., and United Parcel Service, Inc.; persuading the Supreme Court, on behalf of a teetering West Virginia mine owner, that a state judge must recuse himself if he took money from one of the parties in his last campaign -- a now obvious point that was in the couldn't-be-done category two years ago."

In addition to naming Gibson Dunn "Litigation Department of the Year," The American Lawyer also selected the firm as one of two finalists in its Labor & Employment competition.

Gibson Dunn's managing partner, Ken Doran, called the honors a "tribute to our litigators."

Among the firm's attorneys is former U.S. Solicitor General Theodore Olson, a member of the firm's Executive Committee.
