Zoeller: Consumer Alert Program an early success

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Legal Newsline) - Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller says the newly launched Consumer Alert Program is already having an impact on statewide residents.

The state's newest initiative to fight fraud notifies consumers by e-mail or text message of the latest frauds and rip-off schemes that threaten residents and offers tips on how to avoid the scams and what to do if victimized also will be included in the alerts, according to Zoeller.

The Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division coordinates with the Federal Trade Commission, National Association of Attorneys General, Better Business Bureau and other consumer-protection agencies to gather intelligence about scams arising in other states to provide quick notice of the potential threat to Indiana residents.

Residents will receive alerts focusing on topics such as telemarketing robo call scams, illegal foreclosure companies operating in the state, and fraudulent door-to-door solicitors, according to Zoeller.

Since the program's launch on Sept. 4, more than 2,200 people statewide have signed up for the alerts.

"It is a full-time job tracking fraud trends and we appreciate how hard it is for everyone to keep up with all the scams cropping up all over the country," Zoeller said.

"Very few scams actually originate in Indiana and it is our job to monitor and identify which pose the greatest threat to Hoosiers. This alert program is an education and prevention tool consumers can use to protect themselves."
