Former AG to fight for educational funding

PHOENIX (Legal Newsline) - In an effort to force the State to equalize funding in all public schools, former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods is filing a lawsuit next week on behalf of The Arizona Charter Schools Association and a dozen families with students in district and charter schools.

According to The Arizona Republic, the association intends to file the lawsuit against Arizona and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne and it stems from the belief that the State's funding system violates the Arizona Constitution in its mandate to provide all students with a uniform public-school education.

The Arizona Charter Schools Association's complaints include the fact that some schools can offer more transportation, smaller classes, more pay for teachers and better facilities because of what they are receiving, the repoprt said.

The lawsuit would be the third that Arizona has faced in four years over the way it funds schools. The two earlier lawsuits didn't succeed.

The charter school association's planned case would attempt to improve the way the State funds both charter and district schools, which are usually adversaries in these kinds of cases, the report says.
