Poll: Michigan AG trails in gubernatorial race

Mike Cox (R)

LANSING, Mich. (Legal Newsline)-Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox is trailing in the race to succeed Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm in 2010, a poll released Friday indicates.

The attorney general has 15 percent support among fellow Republicans, the Inside Michigan Politics survey showed.

Among Democrats, Lt. Gov. John Cherry is the frontrunner, but the majority of Democratic voters say they have yet to throw their support behind a particular candidate.

The poll of 600 registered voters conducted March 4 to March 10 showed that Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson leads over the five Republicans who have said they are considering a gubernatorial run.

Patterson had 22 percent support, while U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra had 17 percent support, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land had 12 percent and state Sen. Tom George had 2 percent support.

Among Democrats, Cherry had 26 percent support. Daniel Granholm-Mulhern, the governor's husband, had 10 percent support, Michigan State University Trustee and former head football coach George Perles had 4 percent support and House Speaker Andy Dillon had 3 percent of Democrats polled.

In hypothetical general election matchups, Cox was favored over Cherry 41 percent to 34 percent, while Patterson beat Cherry 38 percent to 34 percent.

The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.
