DENVER (Legal Newsline)-Colorado U.S. Attorney Troy Eid says he plans to resign his post and run for state attorney general in 2010.
Appointed by President George W. Bush in 2006, Eid, a Republican, said he will resign from office the day before U.S. President-elect Barack Obama is inaugurated Jan. 20. It is not unusual for U.S. attorneys to leave their post with an incoming administration.
As the top federal prosecutor in Colorado, Eid helped oversee the insider trading case against former Qwest Communications International Inc. CEO Joseph Nacchio.
Eid, 44, said after leaving the U.S. Justice Department, he will rejoin the Miami-based law firm Greenberg Traurig LLP, at its Denver office, where he worked from 2003 to 2006 as an environmental lawyer.
He is also an adjunct professor in American Indian law at the University of Colorado School of Law.
The current state attorney general, Republican John Suthers, is expected to run either for governor or a U.S. Senate seat in 2010. He is currently is the only Republican to hold statewide office in Colorado.
Eid is married to Colorado Supreme Court Justice Allison Eid. If he were elected attorney general, Eid said his wife would step down from the high court.
