Another busy day for Cuomo

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (Legal Newsline) - New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo says he has forced a home fuel oil distribution company to stop automatically renewing the contracts of its customers.

In addition to acknowledging Meenan Oil Company's cooperation with his investigation, the ever-active attorney general announced Tuesday that the company will have to make sure proper notification steps are made before contracts are renewed.

"With home heating costs set to soar this winter, local residents must be able to shop around for the most affordable heating oil prices -- they should not worry about companies automatically renewing their contracts behind their backs," Cuomo said.

"Today's agreement between my office and Meenan Oil Company sends a clear message to companies across the Westchester region: Follow the law and give consumers the chance to make an informed decision on whether or not to renew a contract."

Meenan's contracts did not inform customers of their option to terminate them by written notice prior to the renewal date, Cuomo said. They also did not state that the company was required to give written notification of its automatic renewal provision, he said.

Meenan will not enforce any automatic renewal clauses without providing written notice to customers.

Also on Tuesday, Cuomo announced that his Civil Rights Bureau ensured a baseball stadium in Cooperstown, home of baseball's Hall of Fame, would become more accessible to visitors with physical disabilities.

The Cooperstown All Star Village has conducted a complete overhaul of its facilities, Cuomo said.

"Baseball is America's pastime, and it should be accessible to all," Cuomo said. "Baseball fans from across the nation will now have easy access to a New York State gem that fuels local tourism.

"Across the state, I will continue ensuring that facilities are designed and constructed to provide access to all individuals."
