Oregon's John Kroger faces opposition in November

James Leuenberger (C)

SALEM, Ore. (Legal Newsline)-Law professor John Kroger, who won the Democratic and Republican nominations for attorney general, faces a challenger, finally, in November.

Constitution Party nominee James Leuenberger, an attorney from Lake Oswego, Ore., announced Friday that he too wants to replace retiring Oregon Attorney General Hardy Myers, a Democrat.

Leuenberger, 51, will face Kroger in the November election.
On his campaign Web site, Leuenberger said he has practiced law in Oregon since 1992.

"I fight for the rights of Oregonians. We Oregonians have the rights to speak, worship, and defend ourselves and our property," he said. "Too often our governments restrict these rights. I will do all that I can as attorney general to fight for your rights."

In a statement Friday, he said his campaign will highlight some of the problems with Oregon courts and the need to end public financing of abortion. He also said he planned to encourage Oregonians to be armed as a way to deter crime.

This year he represented a Southern Oregon teacher who was denied permission by the Medford School District to bring her semi-automatic handgun to work to work so she could protect herself from her allegedly abusive ex-husband.

Leuenberger has previously ran for a seat on the Oregon Supreme Court and for a seat on the Multnomah County Circuit Court in Portland.

He earned his law degree at the University of Idaho and worked as a clerk for the Idaho Court of Appeals and as an Idaho deputy attorney general.
