HARTFORD, Conn. (Legal Newsline) - Health insurance provider Aetna has been cheating college students in Connecticut, state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said Wednesday.
Blumenthal claims the company forced about 1,300 students to make out-of-pocket payments that should have been paid for.
Aetna is already cooperating with a broader Blumenthal investigation, admitting it under-reimbursed students in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York for out-of-network health services.
"Aetna commendably is cooperating with my ongoing investigation into the health insurance industry and has rightfully recognized and revealed these unfair under-reimbursements," Blumenthal said.
"I appreciate that Aetna has disclosed the problem -- a good first step -- but now must pay students all it owes."
Students at the University of Connecticut, Quinnipiac University, Connecticut College and Central, Southern, Eastern and Western Connecticut State universities were affected, Blumenthal said.
