JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (Legal Newsline)-Missouri state Rep. Jeff Harris has been endorsed by former Lt. Gov. Joe Maxwell for attorney general, saying he is most able to defeat the Republican contender in November.

Maxwell said in a statement that Harris, D-Columbia, was the Democratic candidate most likely to defeat Senate President Pro Tem Michael Gibbons, R-Kirkwood.

"One candidate rises above the field, in terms of leadership and commitment to Democratic principles, and that candidate is Jeff Harris," said Maxwell, a Democrat who served as lieutenant governor from 2000 to 2005.

"Jeff has been a leader fighting for Democratic values his whole life. He offers Democratic voters our best chance to win statewide and to place a new generation of Democrats in office who will lead our party to victories in the years to come," Maxwell added.

Harris has also been endorsed by former Democratic Govs. Roger Wilson and Warren Hearnes.

Also seeking the Democratic AG nomination is state Rep. Margaret Donnelly, D-Richmond Heights, and state Sen. Chris Koster D-Harrisonville.

They are vying to replace Attorney General Jay Nixon, who is running for governor.
