NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Legal Newsline) - A Knoxville attorney wants to become Tennessee's next Supreme Court Justice.
R. Culver Schmid of Long, Ragsdale & Waters submitted his application Tuesday, a few days before the state's Judicial Selection Committee will stop accepting them.
He is the third to officially apply for the spot that will be created when Current Chief Justice William Barker retires Sept. 1.
Schmid, 49, had no comment. A Knoxville native, he received his law degree from the University of Tennessee and his Bachelor's from the University of Virginia.
The two others who have applied are Chattanooga attorney John McClarty and Court of Appeals Judge Sharon Lee.
The JSC will select a panel of three candidates from which Gov. Phil Bredesen will choose Barker's replacement. The deadline for applications is Friday.
