Scammers claim to be from IRS, Nev. AG says

Masto

CARSON CITY, Nev. (Legal Newsline) - Nevada Attorney General Catherine Masto warned Nevada taxpayers on Friday about a phone scam in which callers attempt to gain access to sensitive financial information.

Masto said scammers are using the name of the Internal Revenue Service as part of an ongoing scam to obtain personally identifying information from Nevada consumers.

In the scam, scam artists use a variety of methods to trick Nevadans. The callers use spoofing technology to make the IRS toll-free number appear on caller ID to make the recipient think it's the IRS contacting the victim. The scam artists may also be able to recite the last four digits of a victim's Social Security Number.

The callers commonly threaten victims with driver's license revocation or even jail time.

Masto warned taxpayers to be aware of the scam calls and to report them to the appropriate offices.

"Nevadans should be alert to these fraudulent calls," Masto said. "Take caution when receiving phone calls that appear to be fraudulent and to report the concern as soon as possible."

Nevadans receiving the calls can contact the federal Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration or the Federal Trade Commission. Masto's Tech Crime Unit is also providing information and tips to avoid phone scams.
