Survey: Majority of Va. voters prefer McAuliffe over Cuccinelli

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (Legal Newsline) -- Democrat Terry McAuliffe has the edge over Virginia Attorney General and Republican Ken Cuccinelli in the race for governor, according to survey results released last week.



According to the poll results, released Friday and sponsored by the University of Mary Washington's Center for Leadership and Media Studies, McAuliffe garnered the support of 42 percent of likely voters compared to Cuccinelli's 35 percent.


Among the state's registered voters, the margin between the two candidates was wider.


Forty-three percent of the registered voters said they supported McAuliffe and 33 percent backed Cuccinelli in the poll.


McAuliffe, the former chairman of the Democratic Party, was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic nomination in the 2009 Virginia gubernatorial election.


He faces Cuccinelli, the state's top lawyer, in the Nov. 5 election.


According to the new survey, Republicans fared best in the race for state attorney general.


GOP state Sen. Mark Obenshain received the support of 42 percent of likely voters, while state Sen. Mark Herring, a Democrat, received 36 percent.


However,mong registered voters, 38 percent supported Herring and 36 percent favored Obenshain.


Republicans have won the last five elections for attorney general.
