N.H. AG warns residents about bank account phone scam

CONCORD, N.H. (Legal Newsline) - New Hampshire Attorney General Joseph Foster and New Hampshire Bankers Association President Christiana Thornton issued a consumer alert Wednesday to warn residents about an active phone scam.

Customers from multiple New Hampshire banks reported receiving text messages and phone calls stating their credit or debit card was compromised. The texts and callers then ask the customer to provide sensitive personal information. The messages are not being sent by the banks and are fraudulent.

Legitimate banks and other organizations will never contact customers via phone call or text message to obtain or verify personal information such as passwords, PINs, account numbers, social security number or date of birth. Customers should call a bank's customer service center prior to providing any personal information over the phone or in response to an email or text message.

Foster said the scams are frequent and that scam artists are creative in avoiding detection and hiding their identity. Some scams are operated from outside of the U.S. and are tough to trace. Consumers should only provide personally identifying information when they have a particular guarantee of trustworthiness. Unsolicited calls or emails may be part of a scam and all suspicious calls should be terminated as quickly as possible.
