Report: Cook County sheriff won't be running for Ill. AG

Madigan

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Legal Newsline) -- Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said this week he plans to run for re-election, ruling out a possible run for Illinois attorney general.

Dart, according to the Chicago Tribune, is often mentioned as a potential attorney general candidate.

"I'm going to run for re-election," Dart told the newspaper Tuesday.

"I have multiple things on my plate right now I want to complete... I'm more driven by getting things done. I'll leave here when I've completed what I'm working on."

Current Attorney General Lisa Madigan, who has served as the state's top lawyer since 2003, has not yet said whether she is going to run for governor or another term as attorney general.

However, in January, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin told Chicago Sun-Times columnist Lynn Sweet that Madigan was "seriously thinking" about a run for governor.

"She had made special outreach to labor and they know it, they've noticed in terms of her showing up at events and the like," Durbin said. "I don't think she has made a final decision. I know she is in the process of making a decision."

According to the Tribune, potential Democratic candidates for attorney general include Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon and state Sen. Kwame Raoul.

On the GOP side, House Republican Leader Tom Cross and state Rep. Jim Durkin are rumored to be considering a run.
