Ind. AG announces licensing complaint against former doctor

Zoeller

INDIANAPOLIS (Legal Newsline) -- Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller on Monday announced a licensing complaint against a former Gibson County doctor for allegedly engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a patient and writing fraudulent prescriptions.

Dr. Christopher May, a former physician at Gibson General Hospital, allegedly had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a patient and wrote her fraudulent prescriptions.

May allegedly wrote at least eight prescriptions for narcotics during a six-month period for the patient under the guise of her mother's name to allow insurance to cover the costs.

Earlier this year, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation issued a consent order to suspend May's Illinois medical license. The suspension was the result of allegations that May inappropriately prescribed controlled substances for a patient.

May pleaded guilty on April 1 as part of a plea agreement to criminal offenses related to registration labeling and prescription forms.

He is now serving a 36-month criminal probation sentence.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Gibson County Superior Court ordered May to surrender his state medical license without an attempt to reinstate it for 36 months.

May was originally arrested in June 2011 and charged with nine counts of conspiracy to obtain a controlled substance by fraud and eight counts of conspiracy to commit insurance fraud.

A Princeton-area pharmacist notified local police of a suspicious prescription transaction and followed up with the patient's mother to uncover the matter.
