CONCORD, N.H. (Legal Newsline) -- Joseph Foster, New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan's nominee for attorney general, has been approved.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that Foster received a unanimous approval from the state's Executive Council.

A swearing-in date has not been set, according to the AP.

The council held Foster's confirmation hearing last week. Members of the council questioned Foster on a variety of topics, including his lack of experience in criminal law and his time in the state legislature.

During the hearing, Foster also said he would not handle any cases involving clients of his law firm if he becomes the state's top lawyer.

A Democrat from Nashua, Foster has served as the chair of the management committee for one of New Hampshire's largest law firms, McLane, Graf, Raulerson and Middleton, where he currently chairs the bankruptcy practice.

In addition, he served as senator for the state's 13th District from 2002-08, rising to majority leader in 2007.

He chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee from 2004-08.

Prior to serving as a state senator, Foster also served in the state House of Representatives from 1995-98.

Hassan, who nominated the former state Senate Majority Leader earlier this month, applauded the Executive Council's confirmation.

"As we saw throughout the confirmation process, Joe Foster is a greatly respected attorney and public servant whose broad experience and excellent judgment will be invaluable as New Hampshire's chief legal and law enforcement officer," she said in a statement Wednesday.

"I have worked closely with Joe, and I know that he will steadfastly defend the cause of justice for the people of New Hampshire at every turn.

"I applaud the Executive Council for confirming Joe Foster and look forward to working with him again to ensure safety and justice for all the people of the Granite State."
