COLUMBUS, Ohio (Legal Newsline) - Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine announced a lawsuit Friday against a Pickerington used car dealer and its owners for allegedly engaging in multiple violations of Ohio's consumer laws.
DeWine's office received dozens of consumer complaints about Dads Car Lot Inc. and owners Gary Jones and William Taylor Sr. In the complaints, consumers alleged issues with misrepresentations, repossessions, certificates of title and repairs and services.
"Buying a car is a major purchase for most consumers and they rightly expect to be treated fairly according to the law," DeWine said. "Businesses must fulfill their promises to consumers, and if they don't, we will take action."
DeWine's lawsuit alleges that Dads Car Lot routinely failed to give consumers dated receipts listing the terms of a sale and routinely failed to apply for a certificate of title within 30 days of a vehicle sale. Dads Car Lot allegedly violated the Certificate of Motor Vehicle Title Act and the Consumer Sales Practices Act.
The lawsuit seeks civil penalties, permanent injunctive relief and full reimbursement to the Title Defect Recision Fund.
To resolve the title complaints, DeWine's office already provided consumers with more than $9,000 in restitution through the Title Defect Recision Fund.
