Former Mich. SC justice joins Wayne State faculty

DETROIT (Legal Newsline) -- Former Michigan Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Kelly has joined the faculty of Wayne State University's law school.

The university said Monday the Detroit native will serve as the school's first "distinguished jurist in residence."

Kelly, a 1971 alumna of the university's law school, served for 16 years on the state's high court. She is ineligible for reelection to the court because of a state law that bars judicial candidates over the age of 70 from running for office.

"We are honored to have Justice Kelly join the Wayne Law faculty," Dean Jocelyn Benson said in a statement.

"Both our students and faculty will benefit from the judge sharing her years of expertise and experiences with us. She will be a tremendous asset for the law school, as she has been for the state."

Kelly, 74, already serves on the law school's Board of Visitors executive committee.

"I look forward to this," the former justice told faculty, assembled for a recent informal luncheon in her honor.

"It's an opportunity to be creative. It seems a natural fit to me that I should come back here."
