N.Y. AG publishes info on Hurricane Sandy charitable activities

Schneiderman

NEW YORK (Legal Newsline) - New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Thursday the posting of information online that details charitable donations raised for Hurricane Sandy relief.

Schneiderman's Charities Bureau requested information from charities on amounts raised and spent for Hurricane Sandy relief in the state, services and grants provided and plans for any surplus funds. To date, 88 charities have responded to the surveys.

"The generosity of the public and the hard work of charities in response to Hurricane Sandy is inspiring," Schneiderman said. "As we continue to monitor charitable activities related to Sandy relief, it is essential that nonprofit organizations operate in the most transparent way possible."

The 88 charities reported raising approximately $400 million for Hurricane Sandy relief. The five charities reporting the most pledges and contributions include the American Red Cross with $188 million, the Robin Hood Foundation with $67 million, the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City with $45 million, the Empire State Relief Fund with $15.4 million and the Salvation Army, USA Eastern Territory with $14.3 million.

The Charities Bureau plans to request updated information and post it online over the next few months. The bureau also plans to seek more detailed spending and fundraising information as it continues to review the Hurricane Sandy relief charities.
