Several furniture stores are facing a suit after they allegedly were found to be participating in shady business practices that were directed toward military service members, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper said Dec. 18.

Freedom Furniture, Inc.; Military Credit Services, LLC; and Freedom Acceptance Corporation, along with their owners Leonard Melley Jr. and John Melley will face paying a settlement to military customers for allegedly double billing customers, which resulted in paying double the price in some cases, as well as having to pay overdraft fees to banks when the customers’ banks accounts were overdrafted.

“Military service members work hard to protect our country, but unfortunately their steady paychecks can make them targets for shady practices,” Cooper said.  “We won’t tolerate unscrupulous businesses that take advantage of military consumers in North Carolina.”

There were 311 customers affected by the alleged scheme, including approximately 180 military service members. These customers will receive approximately $234,000 in refunds.

“Most businesses in military communities want to do right by service members and their families, but some bad apple businesses don’t do things the right way,” Cooper said.  “It’s important that we educate service members about fraud and let them know our office is here as a resource.”
