Vizio allegedly misled consumers about the refresh rates of its televisions

Vizio Inc. allegedly misrepresented the refresh rates of its LCD televisions, a class-action lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on Nov. 24 claims.

The suit, filed on behalf of Maine resident Roger Larsen and others who purchased Vizio televisions after Nov. 1, 2010, alleges Vizio misrepresented the refresh rates of 14 different television models to improve sales for several years.

The refresh rate of a television relates to how many times per second it changes the picture. The higher the refresh rate, the better the image.

Vizio allegedly advertised a refresh rate that is double what the models actually possess and inflated prices to reflect the higher quality.

Rather than using motion interpolation technology – which other companies use to increase the refresh rate from 60 unique images per second (or 60Hz) to 120Hz – the lawsuit claims Vizio uses an inferior back-end technology to create additional images, or simply misstates the refresh rate altogether.
