JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (Legal Newsline) - Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller announced earlier this week that he is running for Congress.

Zoeller said in a news release Monday that he is running for the state’s 9th Congressional District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The GOP attorney general is vying for the seat currently held by Rep. Todd Young, also a Republican. Young is running for U.S. Senate.

Zoeller said he believes Congress is “dysfunctional” and that the nation is in “dire need” of common-ground solutions to its problems.

“As attorney general of Indiana, I have battled the overreach of the federal government, defending our state’s right to make its own decisions without interference from Washington, D.C.,” he said Monday.

“But to rein-in federal overreach, we need a Congress that works… and so beginning today, I will ask the people of the 9th Congressional District of Indiana to allow me the opportunity to help bring about a new day in Washington.”

The 9th District runs from Johnson County outside Indianapolis down to the Ohio River and Indiana’s border with Kentucky. It includes cities such as Greenwood, Martinsville, Bloomington, Seymour, Clarksville, Jeffersonville and Zoeller’s native New Albany.

Zoeller has worked in the Attorney General’s Office since 2001, serving as chief deputy before being elected as attorney general in 2008. He was reelected in 2012.

He previously served as a staff member in the U.S. Senate and at the White House.
