Unions like Chafin for W.Va. SC justice
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Legal Newsline) - Tish Chafin has received the endorsements of several labor unions in her campaign for West Virginia Supreme Court justice.
The endorsements include the Communication Workers of America, American Federation of Teachers -- West Virginia, United Transportation Union and South Central Labor Council.
"I am proud to have West Virginia's working families supporting my candidacy for our state's highest court. I sincerely thank them for their support," Chafin said. "I am a consensus candidate. I have the support of business leaders, working families and law enforcement groups across the state."
Chafin also received endorsements from the AFL-CIO, UMWA, West Virginia Sheriffs' Association and the Deputy Sheriffs' Association.
"I have been working hard and meeting people all across West Virginia. As a result, people are backing my candidacy because they believe I work hard and will be a fair Justice," she said. "I believe that justice is best served when our justices rule based on the merits of the case, not the identity of the parties.
"When I traveled to all 55 counties during my term as West Virginia State Bar President, it gave me great perspective on the diversity of our state and the needs of our legal system.
"I learned how important it is to have Supreme Court Justices who are willing to listen and able to provide the necessary leadership to address problems facing our State's judiciary and the citizens it serves."
In addition to immediate past President of the West Virginia State Bar, Chafin is a Marshall University Board of Governors member, and serves on the Board of Directors of the West Virginia Education Alliance and the West Virginia Children's Home Society. She is an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Charleston.
