McKenna files suit over campaign disclosures

OLYMPIA, Wash. (Legal Newsline) - Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna announced on Friday that he has filed a lawsuit against Moxie Media for allegedly violating Washington's campaign financial disclosure law.

Moxie Media, as well as other defendants named in the lawsuit, allegedly engaged in complex efforts to conceal funding to three last-minute independent expenditure advocacy activities that supported a Conservative Party candidate in the 38th District State Senate primary.

McKenna learned of these alleged activities following a complaint that was filed with the Public Disclosure Commission on Aug. 27 and a citizen action letter filed with his office a week later, both on behalf of Sen. Jean Berkey.

During the PDC's regular monthly meeting in October, commissioners said they learned of multiple violations of the state's campaign finance laws and referred the matter to McKenna's office.

A status conference is set for 9 a.m. on Jan. 28. The defendants will have 30 days to respond and file answers to the complaint against them.

McKenna is seeking civil penalties and all costs associated with the litigation.
