Attorney bringing AG focus to ABA meeting
CHICAGO (Legal Newsline) - The chair of the American Bar Association's subcommittee on state attorneys general will discuss multi-state actions with a pair of AGs when the ABA meets for its annual gathering July 31.
Ashley Taylor, a partner at Troutman Sanders in Richmond and Washington, D.C., who focuses his practice on attorney general cases, will be joined by attorneys general Martha Coakley of Massachusetts and Doug Gansler of Maryland.
Taylor helped organize the subcommittee a year ago to help his colleagues when they get involved in an action by a state attorney general. He plans to put on a series of Continuing Legal Education courses, starting with the one at the ABA meeting.
"We're going to talk about the growing authority of AGs," Taylor said Wednesday. "We're going to talk about the AGs' relationships with federal regulators in the Obama administration, and how people shouldn't treat an AG action like a normal action."
Elizabeth Wilson, the senior vice president and deputy general counsel of CNA Insurance, will join Taylor, Coakley and Gansler.
The seminar will focus on four parts:
-Why certain investigations turn into litigation;
-Why multi-state investigations are unique;
-How successful companies respond; and
-How investigations end.
Taylor said he hopes the seminar will springboard his project.
"We're going to have a series of CLEs on state AGs that will be interesting," he said. "I'm hoping this first ABA CLE will kick off the committee in a big way.
"I expect people will want to participate after this and we'll get some more help."
In March, Taylor participated in a Washington Legal Foundation seminar regarding the growing authority of state attorneys general.
