Possible U.S. SC contender has plenty of alternatives

Sears

ATLANTA (Legal Newsline) - Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears has plenty on her plate even if she is not picked by President Barack Obama to become the U.S. Supreme Court's next justice.

Sears, who is leaving the Georgia court at the end of June, is scheduled to start work at Schiff Hardin on Oct. 15 and also plans to teach a class at the University of Georgia Law School and continue her work at the Institute for American Values, a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says.

"I'm going full steam ahead," Sears said in the report.

Sears has been mentioned as a possible replacement for retiring U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter. Obama may be looking to appoint a female to join Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the only female of the nine current justices.

Names mentioned in media reports as possible candidates include Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and federal appeals judges Sonia Sotamayor and Kim Wardlow.

The report says Sears will work part-time during her first year at the firm, during which she will be a partner.
