Florida AG fined $50K over campaign finance violation

Bill McCollum (R)

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum has been fined $50,000 by the Federal Election Commission for campaign finance violations during the final days of his 2004 run for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.

The Republican was fined for failing to report disbursements totaling $755,839 in his 12-day pre-primary report.

Federal campaign finance law requires campaign committees to file pre-election reports disclosing the total amount of all disbursements along with detailed information on each disbursement over $200.

McCollum's Senate campaign blamed Hurricane Charlie for the paperwork snafu.

McCollum lost the GOP primary race to Mel Martinez, who went on to win the seat. McCollum was elected state attorney general two years later.
