Pro-Cronyn super PAC targeting senator's conservative challenger

Johncornyn

WASHINGTON (Legal Newsline) - Armed with a $2 million donation, Texans for a Conservative Majority has been able to wage an independent media war against U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman, the Republican rival of U.S. Sen. John Cornyn.

TCM, a pro-Cornyn super PAC, raised $2,225,000 in 2013, according to the Federal Ethics Commission.

The largest donation by far, $2 million, came from Bob Perry, a Houston homebuilder who died last April, a month prior to making the sizeable donation.

Barely meeting the filing deadline, on Dec. 9 Stockman, a Tea Party preferred, announced he would attempt to dethrone Cornyn in the upcoming March 4 primary.

The announcement sprung TCM into action, prompting the super PAC to launch a website entitled shadystockman.com and even air a television ad in the cities forming the congressman's 36th District in Southeast Texas.

The ad calls into question Stockman's alleged "ethical failings" and "shady" business deals.

As of Feb. 4, TCM has spent $938,696 in its media war against Stockman, according to opensecrets.org.

The latest expenditures include two made on Feb. 3 of $50,000 and $74,235.

The super PAC was founded by Austin attorney Randy Cubriel.

The Law Office of Randy Cubriel, P.C. is an Austin-based law firm that serves the legal and governmental needs of corporate clients, states the firm's website.
