Delaware AG warns consumers about medical alert device scam

WILMINGTON, Del. (Legal Newsline) - Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden warned residents Wednesday about a scam in which callers promise free medical alert devices to consumers.

In the past several weeks, Biden's Consumer Protection Unit received multiple reports from consumers who received unsolicited phone calls from people claiming to represent a medical device company. The individuals offer consumers a medical alert system for free, but to accept the offer for the "no-cost" product, the caller demands the consumer pay money to cover related costs and provide personal information.

"Always be wary of unsolicited phone calls, letters, or visits to your home offering free products or lottery prizes," Biden said. "Defend yourself against becoming a victim of fraud by independently verifying the identity and legitimacy of any company making an offer and never provide your personal information over the phone to an unsolicited caller."

Biden also said that if an offer sounds too good to be true it probably is.

According to the Consumer Protection Unit, the solicitations may be part of a phone scam targeting senior citizens around the country. Phone scammers also use robocalling and spoofing. Spoofing occurs when a scammer hijacks the name or phone number of a real business and imitates the company in its solicitations and on Caller ID.

Biden's office is not aware of any state residents who were victimized by the scam.
