Maine AG issues consumer alert about overpriced deed processing notices

Jmills

AUGUSTA, Maine (Legal Newsline) -- Maine Attorney General Janet Mills issued a consumer warning Monday about an offer involving a deed processing notice that was mailed to Maine residents.

The notice being sent to consumers tells them that they must send $83 to obtain a copy of the deed to their real estate property. In reality, homeowners can obtain a deed for a much lower price.

"If you want a copy of your deed, contact your local registry of deeds," Mills said in a statement. "You can get a copy much quicker and cheaper from your county registry."

The attorney general warned consumers to read the fine print of the notice, which discloses that copies can be obtained at a lower cost directly from the consumers' county registrar.

Mills alleges the notice is designed to alarm and deceive consumers into buying the service as a much higher cost.
