Wisconsin AG obtains judgment against Sani Enterprises

Vanhollen

MADISON, Wis. (Legal Newsline) - Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced a judgment Monday in an environmental lawsuit against Sani Enterprises LLC for alleged violations of state environmental laws.

Van Hollen's office filed an environmental lawsuit against Sani Enterprises in Kenosha County Circuit Court after the company allegedly violated laws regulating the maintenance of underground tanks for storage, use or handling of combustible or flammable liquids and the proper abandonment of unused tanks. The regulations are meant to protect state waters from pollution due to contamination from combustible or flammable liquids.

Sani Enterprises has storage tanks located on its property in Kenosha known as Hwy 50 Citgo. Sani Enterprises allegedly failed to bring its storage tanks into compliance until after the Department of Safety and Professional Services referred the violations to Van Hollen's office. Following the referral, Sani Enterprises cooperated with Van Hollen's office and brought the tanks into compliance.

Under the terms of the judgment, Sani Enterprises agreed to pay costs, forfeitures and surcharges totaling $5,000.

According to the DSPS, storage tanks must remain in compliance with state laws because soil contaminated with petroleum products can contaminate groundwater flowing through it, emitting petroleum vapors that seep into nearby basements.
