TOPEKA, Kan. (Legal Newsline) -- Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced Thursday the sentencing of the owner of a transient roofing company on felony charges of theft and making false information related to Kansas business transactions.
Derrick White pleaded no contest last month to the charges and was ordered to pay restitution to six consumers totaling $27,656.
Between April 2012 and August, White, doing business as Roof N Tops, was found guilty of contracting with homeowners to shingle their roofs, collecting an upfront payment for materials and failing to return to do the work.
White also was found guilty of making false information after providing a fake certificate of insurance so that he could obtain a city of Topeka contractor license. In addition to the restitution, White must serve two years of probation.
Schmidt's Consumer Protection Division worked with the Osage County Sheriff's Office, the Scranton Police Department and the Topeka Police Department on this matter.
