Ill. AG settles with Freeman Environmental Services

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Legal Newsline) - Illinois Attorney General Martha Coakley announced a consent order Monday with a Union County firm that allegedly engaged in the illegal dumping of hazardous waste materials in a landfill in Desoto.

Under the terms of the settlement, which was filed in Union County Circuit Court, the Herrin-based Freeman Environmental Services Inc. is required to pay a civil penalty of $15,000 to resolve allegations that the company violated state laws related to the safe removal and disposal of hazardous waste.

In 2009, Freeman Environmental Services contracted with an Anna-based dry cleaner to remove and properly dispose of chemicals from the business. Freeman Environmental Services allegedly failed to test and identify the hazardous chemicals prior to discarding them at a Desoto landfill.

"Waste removal companies are responsible for knowing and complying with state laws that require the safe removal and disposal of hazardous waste," Madigan said. "This company will pay the price for violating the standards in place to protect public health and the environment."

Freeman Environmental Services also allegedly used non-permitted vehicles to transport the hazardous material to the landfill.

The consent order resolves the four-count complaint against Freeman Environmental Services.
