In 2004 general election, defeated Jim Eisenhower, the state’s Crime Commission Chair.
Served as Assistant U.S. Attorney for Western District of Pennsylvania (1980-83), specializing in organized crime and drug trafficking. Left for private practice, joining the Pittsburgh firm of Rose, Schmidt, Hasley and DiSalle (1983-89).
Appointed U.S. Attorney for Western District of Pennsylvania in 1989, serving until 1993.
Served as interim Pennsylvania AG (1995-97) after Ernie Preate was convicted of public corruption and went to prison. Returned to private practice after term, joining the Pittsburgh firm of Thorp, Reed & Armstrong (1998-2002) and later starting his own practice, Thomas Corbett & Associates.
In March 2006, told CFO Magazine that “sometimes you can tell that the state (attorneys general) signing on are activists. They probably have an agenda different than mine.”
Stated Priorities
Guarding children against sexual predators; launched Operation Safe Surf in Oct. 2006 to educate citizens about Internet abuse
Protect and educate senior citizens
Combat corruption involving elected officials and government employees
Enforce drug laws, focusing on mid- to upper-level drug dealers
