Yahoo!, DIRECTV, Google, others being sued over movie distribution patent

SAN FRANCISCO (Legal Newsline) - An Ohio-based company is suing Yahoo!, DIRECTV, Google and others for allegedly infringing on its patent for movie distribution.

Red Pine Point LLC filed its lawsuits in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California Monday.

The named defendants include Yahoo! Inc., The Weinstein Company LLC, DIRECTV LLC, Sony Network Entertainment International LLC, Magnolia Pictures LLC, Google Inc. and VUDU Inc.

Red Pine Point, according to its complaints, is organized under the laws of Nevada with a principal place of business in Wadsworth, Ohio. A website could not be found for the company.

Red Pine Point alleges that the defendants -- some of which are movie distributors -- are infringing on its patent by distributing and allowing the public to purchase feature-length movies on mobile devices before they are released in theaters or on disc.

The company claims it is the “exclusive owner” of U.S. Patent No. 8,521,601. The patent covers a method of wirelessly transmitting and downloading a feature-length movie.

Red Pine Point is seeking a jury trial, “reasonable” royalty and pre-judgment and post-judgment interest.

Todd C. Atkins, of Siprut PC’s San Diego office, is representing the company in the lawsuits.
