Paxton, Branch in Republican runoff for Texas AG

AUSTIN, Texas (Legal Newsline) - No candidate seeking the Republican nomination to become Texas' next attorney general received 50 percent of the vote last night.

Texas Sen. Ken Paxton came the close, capturing 566,080 votes for 44.44 percent. Texas Rep. Dan Branch came in at second, hauling in 33.49 percent of the vote, according to the office of the Texas Secretary of State.

Branch and Paxton will once again square off in a May runoff election.

The Republican nominee will face plaintiffs attorney Sam Houston, a Democrat, in the Nov. 4 general election.

Railroad Commissioner Barry Smitherman finished third, capturing 22.06 percent of the vote.

Current Attorney General Greg Abbott is running for governor.
