Michigan AG warns consumers of online ticket scams

LANSING, Mich. (Legal Newsline) - Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette issued a warning to consumers Monday cautioning them to be wary of online ticket purchasing scams during the busy summer event and concert season.

"As we enjoy summer, Michigan consumers should protect themselves from fraudulent online ticket sales tactics," Schuette said. "Summer concerts and events should not be soured by online ticket scammers looking to make a quick buck. Make sure you're buying your event tickets from a reputable online vendor and do your homework to avoid counterfeiting and identity theft."

Some scammers set up a legitimate looking spoof website that appears to be the official website of a venue or ticket outlet. Other scammers sell counterfeit tickets on websites that work as online classified postings. Counterfeit tickets can include text misspellings, omissions of official holograms and irregularities in the ticket's bar code.

Michigan residents can check to see if there are any complaints on file regarding a particular seller through Schuette's Consumer Protection Division.

Special events like festivals or concerts can also occasionally be cancelled by the promoter or venue. When cancellations occur, the promoter, venue or other related planners will sometimes give refunds to consumers. In other instances, the purchased tickets can be redeemed at a later event.
